...In Kano Solar energy: Jigawa to electrify 30 communities The Jigawa government is to electrify 30 communities using solar energy technology. Already five communities have benefited from the programme, according to the deputy governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Hassan. Hassan told a team of experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at the weekend in Dutse that solar energy had provided the state the opportunity to extend electricity supply to remote areas. “We found it appropriate in terms of application at remote areas which are far away from the national grid,” he pointed out. The project, he said, focused on preventing environmental degradation, helping irrigation for agricultural production and improving on water supply to facilitate sustainable economic growth. In that regard, he said, government was working in collaboration with the U.S. government and other donor agencies to expand the project to more remote areas. He said government had embarked on a campaign on the utilisation of coal, and biogas technology as viable alternatives to fossil fuel and firewood. He pointed out that the campaign would go along to check deforestation and enhance healthy and clean environment. MORE...
