ECO's take-off date stands, says Diallo
THE Speaker of Economic Commission for West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament Prof. Alli Diallo has assured that the July 2005 date for the introduction of the ECO currency is irreversible.
This is contrary to insinuations and declarations by government officials, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo that the date may be shifted.
A media report last week had quoted Soludo as saying that the 2005 launch date of the currency was unrealistic based on the poor level of preparedness of the member states.
But at the closing session of the 2004 second plenary session of the Parliament in Abuja last week, Diallo stated that information reaching him from ministers who attended the just concluded summit of Heads of States of West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) in Conakry, Guinea indicated that the summit had commissioned a comprehensive study of the level of macro-economic convergence criteria in all the member states.
The study, he said, would help indicate the level of the readiness of each member state and the possibility of the introduction of ECO.
Diallo, who admitted that there were problems hindering member states from meeting the convergence criteria, explained that the ministers at the summit had a common understanding that shifting the date of the launch of ECO might portray the sub-region as lacking in seriousness to pursue the ECO project
