Plateau leaders laud fleeing residents' return, peace confab ends September 21
MEMBERS of the Steering Committee of the Plateau Peace Conference have embarked on a tour of the state to assess the progress so far made by the forum.
The committee, which has visited some flashpoints in the state, expressed delight at the return of residents, who fled their communities at the heat of the crisis.
Although the conference ends its sittings and submission of memoranda by the public, Vice President Atiku Abubakar will on September 21 formally close the confab.
Briefing participants after a tour of Kadarko in Wasie local council, the panel said the large number of returnees, especially Fulani herdsmen to the area, overwhelmed it.
The Vice-Chairman central zone of the team, Alhaji Alhassan Shuaibu, hinted that there was a remarkable improvement on the return of people to Yelwa in Shendam local council.
He, therefore, urged leaders to forge ahead with the resolution of the traditional and religious issues raised by the syndicate groups.
The groups asked the forum to tackle the indiscriminate issuance and conferment of traditional titles, lopsided representations in some traditional councils and the purported indifference of some rulers to the influx of strangers into their domains.
On religion, the confab will address the desecration of worship places and destruction of shrines, disrespect for religious leaders and the proliferation of worship places.
The Peace and Reconciliation Committee has, however, urged communities in Jos North local council to be honest in their submissions to enable it gather reliable facts that would foster lasting peace in the state.
Its sub-committee chairman, Chief Jethro Aku, told representatives of the two religious groups in the council that the government would not compromise on its resolve to achieve durable peace in the state.
He assured that the government would give all communities fair hearing to ensure true reconciliation among the people.
Representatives of religious groups, Alhaji Abdul Azeez Bashir Adebayo and the Hausa leader of Angwan Rukuba, Alhaji Uba, praised the efforts of the state and the Federal Government to provide a forum for the voice less to be heard.
