Ibori, Agagu end 34-year Delta, Ondo boundary dispute
THE governors of Delta and Ondo states, Chief James Ibori and Dr. Olusegun Agagu yesterday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, agreed to an amicable resolution of the simmering boundary dispute between them, thus ending the over 34-year-old feud over the control of their oil rich coastal areas.
The resolution followed a meeting of stakeholders in the disputed Ilaje-Egbema/ Ijaw boarder communities presided over by Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Also at the meeting was chairman of the National Boundary Commission, Alhaji Dahiru Bobbo.
The major plank of the resolution is that Ondo State would continue to administer the Ilaje-Ogungbeje East of the coastal borderline while Delta would maintain control of the Egbema-Ijaw West end of the zone.
Agagu told state house correspondents shortly after the meeting that both states had administered the respective parts till 1965 when the dispute broke out. Yesterday's resolution, he said, was the only condition for peace to return to the area.
"All of us, for the first time in 34 years, agreed to an amicable resolution of the age-long boundary problem to the effect that, for peace to reign in the area, it is better for each of the states to continue to administer people and communities it had been administering over time," he said.
While confirming the report of the oil spill in Ilaje riverine area of his state, the governor said that the oil companies operating in the area have been contacted to find out which among them was responsible.
He also expressed optimism that the source of the pollution would be known very soon because of modern technology.
