Okpa's body arrives in Calabar amid tears
THE remains of the former Deputy-Governor of Cross River State, Chief John Okpa, arrived in Calabar on Monday amid tears by family members and friends.
Okpa's body, sources close to the family told The Guardian, had since been deposited at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) mortuary.
The erstwhile Deputy-Governor lost his life last Wednesday in a motor accident, which occurred along the Asaba-Benin Expressway.
His younger brother, Emmanuel, and the driver of the vehicle were reported to have died in the accident. His security aide however survived.
The Guardian gathered that the late Okpa and his brother were flung out of the car when the accident occurred. He died later in a hospital in Asaba.
Since the news of his death filtered out, his family has not issued any formal statement yet.
However, his private residence at Atimbo looked quiet and deserted. Few persons were seen around wearing mournful look.
His wife was reportedly away in London when the incident occurred. She is yet to return.
The State Government too has not issued any official statement on his death. Government officials are keeping mute. This they claim is borne out of the silence of the family.
Most people The Guardian spoke with expressed shock at the death of the former Deputy-Governor praying for his soul to rest in peace.
Mr. Mathew Eta, a politician described his death as a big loss to the state considering his political antecedent both at state and national levels.
He said Okpa would even be remembered for his role in the days of the now defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).
