Lagos communities build police stations
SOME police commands in Lagos State are beginning to benefit from the recently introduced community police system.
Two communities, Pedro in Shomolu and Isolo, have built police stations for their commands.
The police station in Isolo was built by the residents of the area under the auspices of Police Community Relations Committee.
The members of the Isolo community rendered this gesture because of what they called good rapport between them and the police officers in the area.
The police station at Pedro is almost completed.
According to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Pedro Police Station, Mr. Samuel Oladiji, the community police system had made things better in his division.
"Before now, the community did not care about the need of this division, they used to say that police was government's agency so they should be catered for by them, but look at the building now," Oladiji said pointing to the building.
What triggered the community's response Oladimeji said was the police's "quick response to distress calls and round-the-clock policing."
His words: "Like you know, we don't sleep here, I have my foam in the office and we do not hesitate to respond to distress calls and information on criminals' hideouts provided by residents."
He continued: "Pedro area and Shomolu are no-go areas for hoodlums because we and the host community are working hand-in-hand, my men and I attend their community meetings and co-operation we receive from them is overwhelming.
"This project of the IGP, community policing, if sustained would better police relations with the public in a far measure."
