Reps to meet Obasanjo over Bakassi
THE House of Representatives has resolved to meet President Olusegun Obasanjo over the handover of the oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroun today.
The House last week raised an adhoc committee headed by the leader of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Wunmi Bewaji to study the judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and report back.
The setting up of the committee followed a motion moved by Essien Ayi, member representing Bakassi in Cross River State, that a United Nations supervised plebiscite be held so that the people could exercise their rights to choose where to belong.
But during the plenary session yesterday, the chairman of the committee, based on the prompting of the Houses Deputy Speaker, Austin Opara, who presided over the Assemblys deliberations reported that the issues involved were so grave and enormous and pleaded for more time.
He said the report available yesterday was just an interim one. Based on this, Opara and the members resolved that the House should go into an executive session with the gallery closed to members of the public and the press.
After about 45 minutes, the deputy speaker reported, when the House reverted to plenary, that it was agreed that members of the adhoc committee and the leadership of the Assembly should liaise with President Olusegun Obasanjo and report back "as soon as possible."
Also yesterday, the House passed a resolution directing the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to seal off any petrol station that fails to display prices at which it sells fuel and adhere strictly to them.
The resolution followed a motion moved by Okwudili Uzoka (Abia) who said petrol stations were in the habit of perpetrating sharp practices by either not displaying their prices at all or displaying different rates from the ones they sell.
It was also resolved that a standard bill board be designed by the DPR for use by all petroleum products retail outlets nationwide.
They added that the DPR put in place a machinery to ensure immediate, complete and strict compliance with the directive on enforcement of the display of prices.
