Olubusola Sokan (1939-2004)
SIR: A woman of immense substance and virtue, a humble, and caring wife and mother, passed on after the briefest of illness in Lagos on August 8, 2004. Auntie Busola, as she was fondly called, was born to the family of Late Rev. Amos Okuwobi Aina and Madam Ebunoluwa Aina on January 20, 1939. Her father was a foremost Anglican priest, a native of Sagamu, while the mother hailed from Isonyin.
Auntie Busola raised six children: Tunde, Deji, Dapo, Yinka, Dayo and Femi to the very best standards in education and morals in her so very short span of life. She was blessed with many good grand children all of whom are fond of her. She spent the latter part of her life attending to the grandchildren and other children of friends and relations. At Lagos, Ifo, Aiyepe and Ijebu-Ode, she had her primary/secondary education and got married in 1959 to Asiwaju Alexander Taiwo Sokan. She proceeded to London for further training in Accounting Machine Operations at South end-On-Sea College, the precursor of today's Computer and IT education. On her return from UK, she worked with Western Nigeria Housing Corporation Bodija until her retirement in 1977.
In private business as major textile dealer, she made an impact selling the toplines of imported and local fabrics/accessories and her shop was a ready point of call for Aso-ebi at major social events.
"A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of one's birth ...better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in the spirit... (Ecc. 7:18)
"The righteous departs, and no man lay it into heart, and merciful men were taken away, no one consider that the righteous is taken away from evil to come ... (Isa 57: 1)
Talking about a good name, patience in spirit, countenance, devotion to family and church, Auntie Busola excels by a very wide margin. She is ever so ready to help and offer words of advice, touching many lives and helping the less privileged. A soft spoken woman, with a golden voice, pretty, tall and full of humour, Auntie Busola served God as an active member of Youth Christian Society of St. James Cathedral Oke-Bola, Ibadan, and also in their female prayer group known as "Jesu dun ni Sisters"
She embraced the ideals of Rotary where her husband is an active member, and in her own right, was a foundation member, and past president Inner Wheel Club of Apata Ganga, Ibadan. She travelled with her husband on Rotary related business to many cities in Europe and America.
Auntie Busola took ill in Lagos and within 72 hours passed on peacefully in the hospital on August 8, 2004. On reflection, her behaviour and actions in her last 72 hours on earth lent credence to her whole spiritual essence as a loving devoted Christian with a foretaste of paradise. May her soul rest in eternal peace. Amen.
