DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — BAYELSA State has commenced the process of establishing a partnership with Kwa-Zulu Natal Province of South Africa on tourism development.
Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha of Bayelsa State said in Durban, South Africa that the process started last week when he met with the Premier of Kwa- Zulu Natal, Mr S’bu Ndebele.
Alamieyeseigha also said that it would take a return visit of Kwa-Zulu Natal officials to Bayelsa to finalise and work out modalities for the actualisation of the partnership.
“This is the beginning of a new relationship and I think we can cooperate in the area of tourism because there is no place in Nigeria that can attract tourists like Bayelsa’’, he said.
He said that a boat ride round the state would reveal that tourism potentials abound in Bayelsa.
“With three types of water including fresh, blackish and salt water which you can not find in any other place, Bayelsa is very unique, has a fantastic vegetation and therefore can be transformed into a tourist haven,’’ he said.
“Of all the water mass in the country, Bayelsa alone has one quarter. We have beautiful beaches and of course our tourism potential is evident,” he said.
Alamieyeseigha, who described the sand beaches in Bayelsa as second to none, explained that transforming them into tourist centres would not require dredging, as there was direct access to the Atlantic Ocean.
In terms of other economic activities, he said that Bayesla could serve as a trade route using its waterways adding that there was room for more oil exploration activities.
He said that with the state capital,Yenagoa, as the fastest growing capital in Nigeria, Bayelsa was expected to learn from developed port cities like Durban so that Yenagoa could be transformed into a model city.
