Anambra govt to boost agric production

Wednesday, September 15, 2004

AWKA—ANAMBRA State government has procured 10 tractors and other agricultural inputs to ensure the success of the  National Special Programme for Food Security. Deputy Gov. Ugochukwu Nwankwo disclosed this in Awka while exchanging  views with a four-member presidential monitoring team on food security. He said the inputs included tonnes of fertiliser and  agro-chemicals as well as more than 400 hectares. Nwankwo affirmed that the state administration was determined to boost and  sustain agricultural production.

He also reiterated the resolve of the state government to assist in the expansion of the national food security programme sites in  Anambra. The deputy governor noted that the programme, established by the Federal Government two years ago, would  enhance food production in the country. He commended the Federal Government for having interest in revamping the agricultural  sector and observed that it was a sustainable way to diversify the nation’s economy. Nwankwo said that while the state  volunteer service scheme was set up to revive agricultural expansion projects, plans were being made to refurbish the  abandoned rice mill project at Omor in the Ayamelum council area of the state.

He noted that when fully operational, the state would be a major rice producer in the country, and pledged the state  government’s commitment to improved welfare of farmers in Anambra. Responding, Mrs Oluwatoyin Adetunji, the team leader,  said the food security programme was community-based, and would involve some 300 farming families in the present 109 sites  across the country.
