Kano has 25,000 unqualified teachers –NTI
From Musa Umar Kazaure, in Kano

AThere are over 25,000 untrained and unqualified teachers in Kano state who are yet to attain the minimum teaching qualification of National Certificate of Education (NCE).
The director of National Teachers Institute NTI, Dr. Ahmed Moddibo Muhammed, who announced this during a courtesy call on Kano state governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, said survey of teachers in various educational institutions carried out by the institute revealed that there are 1876 teachers with diploma certificates without teaching qualifications.
The survey, he said also show that 4,884 of those teaching in the state had higher Islamic studies certificates while 10,681 had grade two and grade one teachers certificate and need to be upgraded to NCE holders. About 8,754 teachers in active service are below TC II level of education, he added.
He therefore called on Kano state governor to as a matter of urgency, order the sponsorship of those unqualified teachers to enrol for upgrading of their qualification to NCE which is the minimum teaching qualification in the country.
Dr. Moddibo said he believed that all the unqualified teachers would like to enrol but may not have the financial resources to do so.
The NTI director also drew the attention of the governor to the plight of some of the state’s serving teachers (DLS) programme but could not collect their certificates due to outstanding course fees amounting to over 7 billion naira.
Dr. Moddibo Muhammed who requested for a piece of land in Kano to enable NTI build its permanent office, said the institute, which was established in 1976 had Kano as its zonal headquarters for northwestern states.
He disclosed that there has been unprecedented increase in enrolment recorded in NCE (DLS) programme in 2003 from Kano state.
“About 1,128 students enrolled in 10 study centers as against 322 in 2001, and 604 in 2003 respectively. In the TC grade II DLS programme, we have over 3000 students enrolling in 2003/2004 in 12 study centers as against 200 students in 2001 and 700 in 2002,” he disclosed.
Responding, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarua reiterated his government’s commitment to provide qualitative education at all levels. He promised to look into the issues raised by the NTI director.
