Immigration panel meets today The Presidential panel on the restructuring of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), will commence sitting in Abuja today. The panel, headed by the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mrs Thelma Iremile, will examine several memoranda submitted to it by the public and stakeholders before making its recommendations. An impeccable source at the Immigration headquarters said today that the intended “trimming” of the service would affect mostly senior officers from Assistant Comptrollers (ACI) to Deputy Comptroller-Generals (DCG). “The Immigration has 476 officers that fall within this cadre,” the source said. “But removing officers alone would not bring sanity to the system rather there should be an overhaul of all operations,” he said. The source said that the aliens office, the monitoring arm of the Immigration, had been moribund due to persistent interference by politicians and senior officers to favour defaulting expatriates. The minister of state in the ministry, Alhaji Saidu Balarabe, had said that the committee would review the infrastructure, equipment, working materials and staff welfare of the service. He said the move was aimed at ensuring good working condition between its officers and men. It would be recalled that the NIS was established in 1963 by an Act of Parliament.   TO NEXT NEWS PAGE...
