Bakassi: House Delegation Meets Obasanjo From Kola Ologbondiyan and Ahamefula Ogbu in Abuja House of Representatives yesterday rose from an executive session with a resolution to delegate members of its committee on the World Court judgment on Bakassi and the leadership of the House to President Olusegun Obasanjo, to parley over the Bakassi issue. This followed call by Leader of the House, Honourable Abdul Ningi for immediate intervention on the matter since the power of the House to adjudicate on the matter would cease, once the peninsula was handed over to Cameroon by the United Nations. Meanwhile, Chairman, Senate Committee on Employment, Labour and Productivity, Senator Bassey Ewa-Henshaw(PDP Cross River), yesterday assured the people of Bakassi Local Government that their area would not be transferred to the Republic of Cameroon today as widely speculated in the media. After the Committee headed by Honourable Wunmi, Bewaji asked that the submission of their report be stood down to enable them get enough copies for members, Ningi said since the handover date was today, there was need for them to do what they have to do about the issue expeditiously. This prompted Honourable Austin Opara, the Deputy Speaker who presided over the meeting, to ask that the gallery be cleared for them to enter into an executive session for 10 minutes. When the lawmakers eventually emerged from the parley, Opara announced that they had received the report and that they were sending a delegation to the President. The Committee was set up after Honourable Essien Ayi representing Bakassi sponsored a motion calling for a United Nations plebiscite to determine where the people Bakassi would want to belong failing which their rights to self-determination would have been trampled upon.
