NUC to Sanction Varsities with Excess Capacity From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja National Universities Commission (NUC), has resolved to sanction universities across the nation which enrols students in excess of carrying capacity. Executive Secretary of the Commission, Professor Peter Okebukola, said sanctions such as suspension of accreditation for over-subscribed programme would be applied to universities that exceed carrying capacity over a successive two-year period. He stressed that if universities stay within the limits of their carrying capacities, the quality of graduates in Nigeria would hardly be compromised stating that the NUC 2004 Needs Assessment survey of labour market expectation of Nigeria graduates confirmed this assertion. "A university that exceeds its carrying capacity has more students than its teachers can effectively teach, the classrooms can effectively accomodate and its equipment for practical work can not allow meaningful individual student interaction, the implication are legion. "These includeovercrowding in lecture rooms, laboratories and libraries, overcrowding in turn is recipe for diminisher teacher-student contact and lack of attention to individual student academic needs, absenteeism in class without detection, predominant use of the lecture and non-innovative methods of instruction, inability of the teacher to effectively grade assignments and examinations scripts as well as examination malpractices unrest disruptibve behaviour and cultism".
