JAMB Records 2.5 Per cent Decrease in Poly Applicants
From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja

Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), yesterday said it recorded 2.53 per cent decrease in the number of those who applied for the 2004 Monotechnics, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Matriculation Examination (MPCE).

The Board said a total of 215,000 candidates would write the Saturday's examination compared to last year's 220,573 candidates.

The Director, Computer Services, Alhaji Abdulrahim Adeniran, who stood in for JAMB Registrar, Professor Bello Salim, said this is due to the disparity in salary structure between graduates of Universities and monotechnics, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

He said the problem was a national one, and it was high the gap is bridged, to encourage more candidates, as students future are threatened if more teachers are not trained.

This year's MPCE would take place in 149 towns across the federation in 1,412 centres. Vital information have been dispatched by post to candidates but those yet to receive them should visit the JAMB-Online services and the JAMBWireless Infor-mation Service to check for their numbers and centres, he said.

Candidates are expected to report at the checking centres in their examination towns/areas, to identify the names of their allocated examination centres which are pasted within the premises.

Adeniran reiterated that JAMB has done away with the use of stand-by centres due to the atrocities candidates perpetrate during the exams. All candidates sitting for this year's exam have been assigned to regular centres to ensure adequate supervision.
