Dabiri, Others Parley on Media Bill
By Olawale Olaleye and Olabisi Lawal

House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Media and Publicity, Honourable Abike Dabiri and other participants, yesterday spoke on the Media Practice Enhancement Bill and agreed that there was need to rework certain sections of it.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dabiri, sponsor of the Bill, said it had a successful first reading but met with some stiff arguments in some sections when it got to the second reading.

She identified such areas as the experience required of an editor of a newspaper, issue of salaries, registration of journalists and deposit, work condition and other sundry matters.

She however, summarised her argument by saying that the Bill should be reviewed and reworked for proper argument.

Moderator of the event, Dr. Reuben Abati of The Guardian Newspaperswho spoke at regular intervals, also said journalists had to make up their minds on whether or not the bill should progress, having reached the second reading.

He, therefore enjoined them to make contributions in the passing of the Bill, because they are the ones concerned.

On her part, Mrs. Ajayi Gbadebo said she was particularly interested in the Bill because of the goals it tends to pursue. Besides, she contended that given the issues involved, there is the need for a broader participation of other stakeholders whose interests are equally at stake.

She said there must be a way of protecting the journalism profession and therefore argued that the 10 years stipulation was not too much, because if anyone could not put up to 10 years in a profession, then why call it a profession?

She was of the view that journalism is not like any commodity that can be dispensed with when not needed, but noted that when an information gets to the public, no matter the level of damage done, it cannot be recalled.
