'2005 Census: Test Case for Democracy' From Chinedu Eze in Abakaliki National Orientation Agency (NOA), has described the 2005 head count as crucial to the country and a test case for the efficacy of Nigeria's hard earned democracy. Ebonyi State representative of NOA, Mr. Emma Abba, made the observation during a press briefing with Ebonyi State chapter of Correspondents Chapel in Abakaliki, the state capital yesteday. He said it is important that Nigerians turn out for the head count, so that government would be able to plan for the country's future growth. Abba said in the past, government did not know the country's growth rate, and therefore did not envisage the population explosion, which now tasks the nation's food production capability and over populated the school system. He said most government owned universities cannot provide accommodation for almost half of its students and remarked sadly that school structures and facilities have been overstretched, resulting in dilapidated infrastructure. "If there had been proper and reliable documentation of the dynamisms in population growth and proper head count in the past, the country could have prepared itself for the upsurge especially among children and youth". he said.
