2007: Nigerians Abroad Mobilise for Atiku
By Olawale Olaleye

League of Democrats, a non governmental pro-human rights group has said it has begun the process of mobilising Nigerians in diaspora, particularly those in Europe and America, in support of the presidential ambition of Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Leader of the group, Chief Victor Uwajeh, said the need for mobilisation in support of Atiku became necessary, in view of the frenzy of campaigns in the country, moreso that the group believes strongly in the aspiration of the vice president.

He said Nigerians abroad are convinced that the country may soon get to the promised land, if the vice president takes over from President Olusegun Obasanjo and continues with the process of rebuilding, which the president has already begun, adding that Atiku stands a better chance to see such rebuilding process to a logical end.

According to him, "it does not take a soothsayer to agree with us that the vice president would make a good president, having been with this administration from inception. In fact, the greatest misfortune that can hit the nation is to have a different person take over, then the office of the president would be in problem.

"Already, we have not had difficulty in convincing Nigerians here (in UK), because they understand the logic and that same message, we have begun to take everywhere in Europe and America. I have been moving round the whole of Europe because of this project, and soon, we are going to have the Holland branch of this organisation launched", he explained.

He said the project has begun to grow so much that there is an increasing need to segregate the organisation from its parent group, the League of Democrats.

He said consultations are going on on the shape the planning would take and urged Nigerians at home to join those in Europe and America and support the Atiku Presidency, because it is in the best interest of all that he takes over, otherwise, the hardship that would visit the economy if a neutral person takes over would be more than the people can tolerate, he said.
