Military Pensioners Protest Leader's Arrest From Onwuka Nzeshi in Warri National Association of Military Pensioners, yesterday dispatched petitions to the Presidency and the National Assembly over the arrest and detention of its National Leader, Comrade Benson Eromafuru, by Military authorities. Eromafuru, according to his personal aides, was arrested last week Thursday by men of the 13 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Calabar, Cross River State and has been held incommunicado since then. ThisDay checks revealed that the arrest may not be unconnected with activities of Eromafuru and his group who have lately engaged the Minister of Defence and some high ranking serving Military officers in a war of words over non-payment of retirement benefits. Minister of State for Defence, Dr Rowland Oritsejafor, had recently blamed the plight of the Military Pensioners on the presence of thousands of ghost names' on the pay roll of Military retirees and gave assurance that pensioners would only be paid after a fresh round of verification. Eromafuru and his colleagues have consistently opposed what they term "endless screening exercise", alleging that its only benefit have been death of military pensioners who are forced to remain under the sun and rain while the exercise lasted. He had gone to Calabar as part of his nationwide tour to sensitise retired soldiers on the need to remain resolute in their demand for their pension benefits, where he was arrested and detained for allegedly being a fake retired Military personnel. National Secretary of the association, Comrade Lance Orhieroh in a statement released yesterday narrated the ordeal of Military pensioners and wondered why those championing the course for their liberation should be victimized.
