FG Urged to Invest More on IT
From Bala Nasir in Dutse
Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, has called on the Federal Government to invest more in Information and Communication Techno-logies (ICT) rather than agriculture and minerals.
Turaki said this when the Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Turner Isoun, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
He said there is a shift in wealth creation the world over now, "it is not through agriculture or minerals but the focus now is on ICT."
Our agricultural practice in the country which still employs the manual implement rather than mechanised, in addition to biomass technology is costlier, compared to those employed in other parts of the world, and as such, we cannot compete favourably with them, he said.
The country generates N14 billion from the sale of oil annually, according to statistics, the same amount is being generated every month by Singapore from the sale of computer equipment it produces," Turaki said.
He said the nation could not help but enter into the new wealth creating business, and therefore called for a refocusing of the nation's human resources towards computer literacy and ICT related projects and programmes.
This, he said, is what Jigawa is aiming at in the last three years and has achieved a great success.
"When this project is fully on, our state will be able to get 10 times what the oil states in the country get in a year in no distant time."
He lamented that, "our agriculture that we always boast of is significantly small, compared to that of developed nations who are always conducting researches to boost the sector.
"We say we are the largest producers of cassava in the world, but only last week when we visited China to get market for our cassava, we found out that we cannot penetrate the market due to the fact that, ours cannot compete with that of Korea, which is closer to China." The cost of producing our cassava is prohibitive by far in comparison, he said.
He called on the Federal Government to embark on technologies that will help farmers compete in the world market so as to increase our earning in the sub-sector.
