Minister Accused of Ethnic Cleansing FCT By Oke Epia Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has been accused of executing a programme of ethnic cleansing targeted at the Igbos, in the on-going rationalisation exercise in the ministry. This accusation was made by a group, Igbo Leadership Forum (ILF) in a statement signed by its leader, Dr. Eustace Ejikeme, which also called on President Olusegun Obasanjo to relieve the minister of his appointment. "We condemn the premeditated ethnic cleansing that was carried out in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Ministry by the minister in the name of down sizing staff," the group said, noting that "several Directors, Deputy Directors and Assistant Directors of Igbo extraction were vindictively sacked." Stating that el-Rufai's action was reminiscence of a similar one by the Ministry of Aviation some time ago, the group said,: "from all indications, the exercise is part of the agenda by the perpetrators to diminish and subvert the relevance of Igbo in the ministries. Why should Igbos continue to be victims of such questionable exercises?" The ILF argued that it was largely the efforts of Igbo that led to the rapid development of the FCT when "not many had faith in the project," adding that Ndigbo used "their resources to develop the city such that today, there is no structure or development in the FCT that does not boast of at least, 80 per cent input by Igbo.
