'Why New Pension Scheme Was Introduced' KATSINA From Jare Ilelaboye in Katsina Katsina State Head of Service, Alhaji Yakubu Haruna, has declared that the federal and state governments introduced the new contributory pension scheme, to find lasting solution to the imminent crisis in the public sector. Haruna made this observation while declaring open a two-day workshop on the sensitisation of civil servants towards the new pension scheme in the state. He said with the salary review in the public service, there has been corresponding review of pension rates in which pensioners are increasing by the day. He said as a result of review of wages of public officers, the budgetary provision for the payment of retirement benefits are becoming increasingly high, and competing with the allocation of funds for government projects in various parts of the country, which necessitates the contributory pension scheme. In his own address, the Permanent-Secretary Establishment and Service Matters in the state Alhaji Isa Mani said this year alone, the state government has paid about N370 million to retired officers in the state between January and August this year. He said between January to August this year alone, a sum of more than N200 million as well as N170 million paid as death gratuity to pensioners in the state. So far, he said, government has released about N2 billion naira which was paid as pension and gratuity to the retired officers in the state.
