Council Boss Explains Role in Ataba Crisis RIVERS From Okon Bassey in PortHarcourt Chairman, Andoni Local Govern-ment area of Rivers State, Honourable Monwan Owoh Etete, has explained his role to forestall the recent outbreak of violence in Ataba during which over 35 lives were reportedly lost and property worth millions of naira destroyed. In an interview with THISDAY, Etete said community should blame themselves for their woe, rather than personalities outside the community, because initial peace processes were thwarted by warring factions. Chronicling the genesis of the crisis that began in 1988, Etete said within a month of his being sworn into office, he summoned a meeting of all stakeholders in the area to chart a new course. As part of efforts to bring peace to the community, he said it was agreed that all the factionalisedcommunity Development Committees in the area be dissolved and a peace committee constituted. "The second measure was asking both parties to down tools or weapons so that we can look at the measures and also put in place provision to ameliorate the suffering of those who are affected.
