Balogun Makes Case for Democracy Osun From Hammed Shittu in Osogbo Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tafa Balogun, yesterday called on the police and media to work hand-in-hand to protect the nascent democracy. Balogun disclosed this in Osogbo, Osun State yesterday in a lecture titled "Police and the Press," at the Osun NUJ Press Week, adding that the police and the press should see themselves as the two professions that could enhance the sustenance of democracy." According to him, "the society got the police and the media it deserved and urged journalists to shun painting the police black, especially in the area of corruption. "The police and journalists are partners in progress because it is better to let members of the press see reason why a story should not be used rather than outright evasion and withholding of information." Balogun, represented by the assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Lagos, Mr Gazali Lawal, said "the police, in a democracy, are supposed to respect the freedom of the press to publish facts, ideas and opinion without any interference from government or other groups." He, however, advised that, "Nigerian press should be wary of endangering national security by publishing details that could expose national secrets and endanger the country and its people."
