Workshop Identifies Obstacles to Investigative Reports Lagos By Godwin Haruna A media workshop has observed that the current dearth of well-researched investigative reports in the Nigerian media is due largely to the fact that investigative reporting involves huge costs and requires a lengthy period of time to mature. According to a communiqu� at the end of a two-day training workshop on investigative Journalism in Lagos recently, other obstacles are the fact that investigative reporting is potentially dangerous as it could necessitate stepping on the toes of the powerful or influential. The workshop also listed other factors as the fact that investigative reporting requires access to public documents which is made difficult because of the absence of a freedom of information law and the presence of laws/legislations such as the official secrets act, which inhibits the free flow of information and the fact that most journalists showing commitment to investigative reporting are not well motivated or rewarded, among others. The training was organised by International Press Centre (IPC) Lagos at the lecture hall of the College of Journalism, Independent Journalism Centre (IJC), Ogba, Lagos. The communiqu� signed by the coordinator of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, observed that despite these obstacles the Nigerian media could still improve on investigative reporting if all stake holders and interest groups play their roles effectively.
