Bauchi State House of Assembly has called for the handing over of Arabic colleges to the State Special Schools Management Board (SSMB) to ensure quality and efficiency in the teaching and learning process of the colleges as well as improve education in the State.
A member of the Assembly representing madara/chinade constituency, Hon. Abdullahi Yayu said there was need to hand over the Government Arabic College, Jama'are and Government Girls' Arabic College, Alkadiri to the SSMB.
The lawmaker said this became necessary as it would improve the quality of education in the state, adding that Government Arabic College, Jama'are that was established in 1974 as a Teachers College and later converted to Government Arts Secondary School and after creation of Gombe State, it was changed to Government Arabic College, Alkadiri was established in 1980 as a female institution.
He lamented that since the establishment of the two colleges, no renovation work was carried out and as a result of the development, the colleges have been in poor condition and not conducive for leaving adding that the two colleges lacked students' hostels, classrooms, offices, staff quarters while those few available are in various stages of deterioration.
Shehu-Yayu also revealed that the academic staff strength of the college were inadequate to cope with the academic demands, while other problems, he added, include lack of standard library, laboratories and shortage of water stressing that the deplorable condition under which the students live is difficult for them to concentrate and do their best.
He further stated that the legislators will not be fulfilling their democratic responsibilities unless they improve the educational standard of the state.
After three out of the four co-sponsors spoke on the merits of the motion with extensive contributions from members, who also called for amendments, the motion was adopted by the House.
