Ten-year-old Master Ife-anyi Wilcox, a student of the British Intern-ational School (BIS), Lagos, yesterday bagged a publishing contract, from Spectrum Books, Limited, Ibadan, at the awards ceremony of the Bookworm story writing competition.
Wilcox emerged winner of the competition, organised by Bookworm, a Victoria-Island book store for primary school pupils. Participants were required to write no more than 800 words on the topic, 'My Dream for Nigeria.'
Apart from the publishing contract which was Spectrum's contribution to the competition, Wilcox, a pupil of the Lagos Preparatory School when he wrote the story, also got a cash prize of N25,000, courtesy of Metro-politan Bank, a certificate, a Bookworm Discount card of 10 per cent off any book purchased for the next one year and a trophy.
Master Tochukwu Onyen-okwe, pupil of the Corona School, Victoria Island and son of the broadcaster, Mrs Adesuwa Onyenokwe, came second. He got a certificate, cash prize of N15, 000, the Discount Card and a plaque.
Miss Aziza Balogun of the Lagos Preparatory School came third and got a certificate, cash prize of N10,000 and the Discount Card.
Chief Judge of the competition and ace actress, Mrs Joke Jacobs, said "the entries were great fun but they also made me sad. I wish they could read their entries to the national assembly may be they would be able to get through."
Other judges were Seffi Attah, winner of the 2004 BBC African Short Story Competition and Chude Jideonwu, a columnist in THISDAY The Sunday Newspaper.
Bookworm had launched the competition in May, to mark its 10th anniversary. Its Chief Executive, Mrs Adeola Adewunmi said: "the story writing competition has given me greater satisfaction than I could have derived by celebrating the 10th anniversary in any other way. It is such a pleasant surprise to find that our children still have a fertile imagination in this environment where they find little or no encouragement."
