House Commended on Labour Bill By Abimbola Akosile Members of the House of Representatives have been commended over its plan to do a thorough job on the controversial Labour Bill by raising a committee for public hearing and its promise to reflect the wishes of Nigerians on whatever action it takes on the Bill. Describing the Labour Bill as capable of rendering prostate labour movement in Nigeria, Dr Joel Okei-Odumakin, General-Secretary of Campaign for Democracy, in a statement claimed the Senate had chosen the path of dishonour by passing the Bill, with only one- third of its members in attendance. "We appeal to the Representatives to listen to all shades of opinion on the Labour Bill, so that they would take an informed position. But as far as most Nigerians are concerned, the Bill is a worthless piece of paper that is only fit for the trash-can", Okei-Odumakin said. According to him, "our opposition to the Bill is based on the fact that its provisions are undemocratic, anti-thetical to a virile labour movement, and can endanger democratic development in the country and a preface to the emergence of full-blown dictatorship and one-man rule in Nigeria". He said the Trade Union Act and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria were sufficient enough to deal with the operation of the labour movement, claiming that there were sufficient problems and contradictions to the system which necessitate calls for a Sovereign National Conference (SNC), to which his administration has turned deaf ears.
