Adequate Welfare, Panacea for Sharia From Yakubu Musa in Kano Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Sanusi Ciroma Yusuf, has said full implementation of Sharia was only possible if government provided adequate social welfare for the citizenry. Ciroma, who spoke yesterday, while receiving members of the National Committee on the Reform of Criminal Justice, noted that there are certain procedures and steps to be observed before the fate of any suspected criminal is determined. " Social welfare provided by government in order to have the Islamic legal code fully applied and implemented," he said. He said no meaningful success could be recorded in the implementation of the law, if government neglect its responsibility of providing basic amenities for the people, "You can't amputate the hand of a thief, for example, if the state did not provide adequate basic things and opportunities to earn livelihood legitimately." he said. Earlier, Chairman of the committee, Mr Chino Obigwu, told Yussuf that a panel was set up in order to review criminal justice codes. According to him, the use of the absolute laws often cause delays in the dispensation of justice, which results in prison congestion.
