Soldiers Kill 2 in Bayelsa From John Iwori in Yenegoa Barely one week after Bayelsa State Governor, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, received an award as the best governor on security in the country, soldiers suspected to be members of "Operation Restore Hope" have shot two persons in the state capital, Yenagoa. The victims were former Caretaker Chairman of Community Development Committee (CDC) in Peretorugbene, Ekeremor Local Government area, Mr. Collins Akassa and a passer-by, one Mr. Nwachukwu. THe state Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Andrew Oburududu, who confirmed the incident said the killing occurred Tuesday night at Agudama-Epie, one of the numerous suburbs of the state capital. He stated that information at the command disposal indicated that the military truck carrying the armed soldiers had trailed the late CDC chairman to where he met his untimely death near his Mercedes Benz saloon. "Akassa was not only shot, a passer-by was also hit by the bullet," he added. The police spokesman noted that whereas the armed solders killed Akassa on the spot and took his corpse away to unknown destination, the body of late Nwachukwu has been deposited at the mortuary of General Hospital, Okolobiri in Yenagoa Local Government area. Though the PPRO declined to give reasons why Akassa and Nwachukwu were murdered, THISDAY checks revealed that it may not be unconnected with the election of the substantive chairman of CDC for the oil-rich community. Many multi-national oil companies operating in the oil and gas rich state pay oil royalties and other largesse to their host communities via CDC and elections into the body in recent times have often ended in protracted crisis leading to the loss of lives and properties.
