Scholarship for Esan Youth Delta By Fabian Madu Pained by the educational deprivation students suffer as a result of poverty, a philantropist Mike Onolememen, has announced a scholarship programme for the indigent tertiary students of Esan origin in Edo state. Tagged "Mike Onolememen Scholarship Foundation", the scheme would assist students in various institutions of higher learning across the country. According to him, "it breaks my heart that otherwise brilliant students are abandoning school for lack of financial means to continue, this is antithetical to the development of our country," he said. He announced the scheme while speaking at a seminar and the launching of an Almanac organised by the Uromi Students Association, explaining that the foundation would be managed by Professor Patrick Onolememen, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. Speaking on "Life After School," he identified preparation as the key to success, adding that establishment of priorities, achievable targets and taking on tasks one at a time, are virtues that would stand students in good stead later in life. Onolememen, a former consultant to the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), assured that besides the scholarship foundation meant to productively engage the vibrant energies of Esan youth, he hopes to establish a youth development programme to cover all parts of Edo State. He, therefore, implored students not to be discouraged at occasional failures in life, urging them to use such setbacks "as an opportunity to begin again more intelligently".
