N/Assembly Seeks Proper Funding for Hospitals
From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos

The National Assembly has decried Federal Government's poor funding of the nation's teaching hospitals, warning that government's non-challant attitude to the health sector portends great danger to the sector.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Gbenga Ogunniya made this observation when the committee paid a working visit to the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).

Ogunniya said the Senate was making frantic efforts to ensure that government injected more funds into the system, noting that the health sector had shown greater commitment in upgrading all teachings hospitals across the country to meet with current standards obtainable in other countries.

While decrying the braindrain pervading the sector, the chairman stressed that the main reason Nigerians seek medical treatment abroad was because of the rot and decay that pervades in the system.

According to him, the country is blessed with enough medical manpower to compete with their counterparts in other countries only if government would willfully inject more funds to improve conditions.

Ogunniya further stated that the committee was in Jos to assess the level of work done at the institution's permanent site explaining that the committee is also mandated to ensure that allocated funds earmarked for the sector were judiciously used.

Acting Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Venjil Ramyil had earlier appealed to the Federal Government to assist the hospital to move to its permanent site which has over the years been hampered by lack of funds.

Ramyil noted that recent shortfalls in federal allocation to the hospital was hampering smooth payment of salaries and allowances as well as the completion of other projects.
