Daily Times suspends publication

DAILY Times of Nigeria has announced the suspension of publication of some of its titles with effect from last Monday, September 13, 2004.

The newspaper group's Chairman and Chief Executive, Mr. Fidelis Anosike, said that the main publication, Daily Times and the weekend publications, Saturday Times and Sunday Times, would be off the newsstands nationwide until November. Business Times will however, remain in circulation.

"It is imperative that we temporarily shut down operation so that we can overhaul our machinery and re-orientate our human capital in readiness for our plan to make the Daily Times titles the first newspapers of choice in Nigeria," Anosike said.

"The printing press is long due for repairs, which we hope to effect when we take this temporary break," adding: "As for staff, they would also undergo critical training during this period so as to keep them up to speed with the vision of the new management."

He disclosed that only the editorial division of the newspaper would be affected by the suspension of publication, stressing: "The Daily Times Group is a going concern and all its proper business structures will remain in place as we work towards a re-launch of the newspapers in the next couple of weeks."

Anosike enjoined the newspaper group's stakeholders to view the suspension of some publications as a necessary step to make Daily Times bigger and better.

"We are going to up the ante, we are going to increase the tempo and take the print media in Nigeria to another level when we return," he assured.

The management of the 78-year old Daily Times group changed hands on August 31, 2004 when the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) formally handed over the company to Folio Communications, which emerged as core investor in the bid for ownership of Nigeria's oldest newspaper establishment.
