ABUJA — PRESIDENT Olusegun Obasanjo has called for cooperation and mutual support between Nigeria and the United States of America in the maintenance of the security of Africa’s oil-rich Gulf of Guinea in the interests of the two nations.
He made the call in Abuja, yesterday, at the opening of the Nigerian-US Investment Conference organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in collaboration with the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA), a Washington-based group of investors.
“If we are going to be joint guarantors in the Gulf of Guinea, then we must be mutually supportive. Whichever way you look at it, for us in Nigeria and the US and indeed for the economy of the world, everybody knows that the Gulf of Guinea is a major factor. I know we need to ensure the security of the area and that was why this administration spearheaded the creation of the Gulf of Guinea Commission.
“We should have an instrument to resolve whatever issues arise among the neighbouring countries. That is what we have done in our sea boundary with Sao Tome & Principe. We have also resolved similar boundary issues with Equatorial Guinea and very soon we will resolve the issue with Cameroun.
“We are ready to play the role expected of us and which we are playing but sometimes when we need to move, we lack some capacity. It is therefore necessary for the US to support us so that we can move when we need to.”
The president, urged the US to demonstrate its friendship by converting Nigeria’s indebtedness of less than $1 billion to a development grant, as according to him, if the US could grant debt relief to Russia with a population of about 150 million just like Nigeria but produces 9 million barrels of crude oil daily, as well as grant debt relief to Iran whose per capita income is six times above that of Nigeria, there was no justifiable reason for the US not to grant the nation debt relief.
