Another bunkering ship, MT Jimoh missing; Reps summon minister, Defence chiefs

By Ben Agande
Friday, September 17, 2004

ABUJA — The House  of Representatives Committee on Navy, which is investigating circumstances surrounding the  disappearance of the ship MV African Pride yesterday alleged that another ship arrested by the Navy has also disappeared from  the country’s territorial waters.

Chairman of the committee, Mr. Anthony Aziegbemi told journalists in Abuja yesterday that as part of the second phase of the  committee’s investigation, the committee had invited the Minister of Defence, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, Chief of Naval  operations, Admiral A.O Agbitti as well as the present and the immediate past Flag Officers of the Western Naval Command,  Admirals Samuel Kolawole and Antonio Bob-Manuel to appear before the committee next week.

He said the ship newly discovered to be missing, MT Jimoh was one of the 23 ships arrested by Naval authorities for alleged  engagement in illegal oil bunkering in the country. The chairman said the committee would leave no stone unturned in its desire to  ensure that the mystery surrounding the ship is unravelled.

He told Vanguard in an exclusive interview that the committee at the end of its investigations would recommend stiff sanctions  against those found to have been involved in the missing ship. Hon. Aziegebemi further disclosed that the president has given his  backing to the activities of the committee and has promised that he would give all necessary support to the legislature in the  investigations.

“The president said in the letter that he is on top of the situation and has given necessary directives to appropriate quarters on the  matter. We are happy at the executive’s co-operation with the legislature in this matter,” he told Vanguard.
