2 Americans, Briton kidnapped in Iraq
CHINWE MADUAGWU,
(with agency reports)
The spate of
kidnappings continued in Iraq yesterday with the abduction of two Americans and
a Briton from their homes in Baghdad, the capital.
This brings to 20 the number of people
currently held hostage by various militant groups in Iraq.
Reports quoted an Iraqi Interior Ministry
spokesman, Col. Aduan Abdul Rahman as saying that gunmen seized the three
civilians at dawn from a house in Baghdad’s Mansour neighbourhood.
"Two Americans and a British civilian were
kidnapped from their house in Mansur district in Baghdad this morning around
0600 (0200 GMT), Col. Rahman stated.
He said the men who were employees of Gulf
Services Company, a Middle East-based construction company, were bundled into a
van and driven off.
Meanwhile, reports said a car was missing
from the house where the men were abducted, and was apparently taken by their
abductors.
As at press time, no group had claimed
responsibility for the kidnappings, even as both the US and British embassies
say they were investigating the incident.
Reports said the Mansour district is a
wealthy residential area on the River Tigris where many multinational companies
have their headquarters.
Many foreign businessmen and contractor
are also said to live there if they are not staying in the heavily-guarded green
zone.
Following the formal declaration of the
end of the Iraqi war in May last year, insurgents have taken to kidnapping
foreigners so as to destabilize the interim government which they see as a
stooge for the American government.
In the past 19 months, over 100 foreigners
have been kidnapped. While some were released, some were killed, and few others
remained under captivity.
Among those who are still being held are
two female Italian aid workers and two French journalists.
Those killed so far include 12 Nepalese
cleaners and cooks, two Pakistanis, two Bulgarian truck drivers, an Italian
journalist, a Turkish laundry worker, a South Korean translator and an American
businessman.
Kidnappers have vowed not to spare any one seen to be
helping the Americans.
