Kure Seeks Funds for Niger River Devt Commission From Jide Orintunsin in Minna Niger State Governor, Abdulkadir Kure, has appealed to the National Assembly to ensure the appropriation of funds in the 2005 budget for the take-off of the proposed Niger River Development Commission. He made this passionate appeal while meeting the Senate Committee on Water Resources led by Senator Tunde Ogbeha in his office in Minna. The governor explained that the take-off of the commission as promised by President Olusegun Obasanjo, will go a long way in alleviating the suffering of the communities along the flood plain of Rivers Niger and Kaduna. Tracing the genesis of the commission, the governor noted that the plight of over five hundred communities along the flood plain of these rivers led to the agitation of the establishment of Hydro-Electric Power Producing Area Development Commission (HYPPADEC) by Niger, Kebbi, Kogi and Kwara states. The agitation for HYPPADEC was however dropped following a superior proposal by President Obasanjo for the establishment of Niger River Development Commission. A proposal which reviewed the acceptance and support of the affected states. He said the President during his visit to the affected areas, promised to make a budgetary proposal in 2005 appropriation bill for the take-off of the commission. "It is in the light of this that I am appealing to both houses in the National Assembly to support the allocation of funds for the take-off of the commission in the 2005 budget," he pleaded. The governor said the take-off of the commission will go a along way in easing tension in the flood prone areas, adding that people on the plain of Rivers Niger and Kaduna, will soon start to experience flood in a couple of weeks.
