'N2.1bn Needed for Network Expansion' From Kingsley Nwezeh in Abuja Nigeria's first fixed wireless operator, STARTECH Connections Limited said it required N2.1billion to expand its services to Kaduna, Kano, Nassarawa and Plateau States from its operational base in Abuja. Speaking in Abuja yesterday at the close of the "Ist STARTECH Golf/Lawn Tennis Tournament" organised by the company in collaboration with the Sheraton Hotels at the IBB Golf Course in Abuja, Managing Director of the company, Anne Bresnahan said the organisation's growth was hampered by paucity of funds. He criticised the growing preference for mobile phones as against land lines by Nigerians. She said her company enjoys a market share of about 50 percent in the nation's capital but lamented that "people were getting increasingly addicted to mobile phones and that is making things difficult for us" just as she noted that the company was also moving to other districts in Abuja such as Apo Village, Asokoro and Maitama. By next year, the company plans to move into the above-mentioned states where its original license covered, an additional N200 million is needed by the company for the installation of two base stations in Abuja. On the golf tournament, she averred that it was part of the company's social responsibility obligation. She said the tournament featured 38 participants including former Minister for Foreign Affairs, Chief Tom Ikimi, Honourable Garry Eneh, member House of Representatives and Air Vice Marshal Ataudi. Highlights of the tournament was the presentation of trophies in the competition that featured club members and guests. The cost of the tournament was put at N5million.
