Monthly Revenue Increases
Plateau
From Funmi Peter-Omale in Jos
Following the relative peace in Plateau, since the proclamation of state of emergency, the Board of Internal Revenue has recorded 63 per cent increase in monthly revenue collection.
Chairman of the Board, Mr. Shehu Pukat, told newsmen at a press conference in Jos weekend, that there has been an increase in the level of economic activities which he said positively impacted on internally generated revenue in the last few months.
His words: "The current peaceful co-existence has ensured the return of confidence by the business community. From an average monthly revenue collection of N80 million for the months of January to July 2004, the figure shot up to a whopping sum of N130 Million in August; giving a leap of over N50 Million or 63.5 percent compared to last year's collection of N60 million in August. This represents a percentage increase of 122 percent."
While noting that the board has already surpassed the projected revenue of N100 Million per month, Pukat affirmed that with the recent computerization of the board, the organization is more poised to serve the citizens better as well as record more impressive results.
He declared that the Board recently embarked on Taxpayers Identification Exercise throughout the state lamenting that it was unfortunate the affluence in the society are the greatest tax offenders.
"It is true that states are not generating enough because of citizens' tax evasion. Of particular concern is the taxation of the affluence who we consider the worst tax evaders, they are always on the run."
On the issue of touting in the board, the chairman said it was a great concern to government noting that it was one singular area of revenue flight for the state government.
"We look at the issue as a subversive move against government by those involved and we have set in motion control measures to be able to solve and curb activities of touts within the board.
We have notified the law enforcement agents to assist. Again I must also say that the board would not spare any member of staff collaborating with touts. We are generally purging the system" he disclosed.
