Robbers unleashed terror on highways in Niger State last week, killing no fewer than 11 persons, injuring eight and carting away an undisclosed amount of money in three different operations
Though the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ernest Ibhaze, put the number of causalities at six, THISDAY checks however revealed that 11 lives were lost to the bullets of the hoodlums on Thursday night along Minna/Suleja road.
According to an eye witness, the bandits numbering about 20 had in the early hours of Thursday took over the ever busy road, inflicting injuries on commuters and dispossessing travellers of their money and other valuable materials.
Dressed in military and police uniforms with some in Fulani attire, the bandits operated for almost an hour, sparing no one that ran into their blockade. A team of policeman from Kafinkoro raced to the scene but the hoodlums escaped through a nearby forest.
By night, at about 8pm, the trigger happy hoodlums came back to the road again to unleash greater mayhem killing and injuring people. Occupants of four vehicles - two Lagos and Onitsha bound luxurious buses were victims of the raid.
But a tip off to Senator Idris Kuta by a team of police men saved him from running into the robbers. However, the only female member of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Tasala was not that lucky. She was injured along with her business partner in the Lagos bound luxurious bus.
Confirming the attacks, the state commissioner of police told newsman in Minna weekend that as soon as he got the report of the attack, he dispatched a strike force made up of a team of mobile policemen, anti - robbery team and others to the scene, only for the robbers to disappeared into the bush before his team arrived.
He added that a hunt by a team of mobile and policeman from Kafinkoro with some local hunters in the bush failed to yield any arrest after several hours of the man hunt, forcing the search team to withdraw by night fall from the bush.
