Fast Food Operators Kick Against Multiple Taxes
Lagos

Association of Fast Food Operators and Confectioneries of Nigeria (AFFCON) has expressed its opposition to the series of sales tax imposed on them by federal, state, and local governments.
Speaking at the end of the association's meeting in Lagos, the protem President, Mrs. Olayinka Adedayo, said such impositions are unjust and that the time has come for the fast food operators to speak with one voice against the problem.
"It is unjust to impose sales tax on us since we are already paying VAT to the Federal Government. Again, the state government imposed regularisation fees on us unjustly not to talk of the local government daily menace and nuisance in collecting almost on daily basis one form of rate or tax or levy or the other," he explained
Adedayo, who is also the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of De Tastee Fried Chicken Limited, argued that some members of AFFCON have approached Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and its Physical Planning counterparts on the issues of sales taxes and other forms of collecting money from the operators but has not recorded much success.
"All we are hearing from them is that the state government would look into the matter. We were even directed to see an officer in the environment ministry. This particular person has not been fair to us. As if that is not enough, series of people, claiming to be staff of different agencies in the state, have been harassing us with one form of payment or the other.
"While some of these officials insisted on collecting the money whether we like it or not, some have promised to stage a bitter come back in the nearest future. Tell me, how much do you think we make in this business, that is making these government agencies to come frequently to harass us," she regretted.
She continued: "We have tried our best in making the environment clean. Even our eatery places are very clean and neat. We are law- abiding people, but when our rights are being treaded upon, we would be made to disagree. That is why we have resolved to pay our VAT as at when due are not sales tax," she stressed.
