Northern youth groups back Marwa for Presidency
THE Presidential ambition of former Lagos State Military Administrator, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) at the weekend received a boost as several Northern youth groups have backed his bid.
The youth organisations numbering about 500 gave their support for Marwa during a rally held at the Murtala Square, Kaduna.
The theme of the rally was "The Search for an Ideal Leader for Nigeria in 2007."
Specifically, the Northern youths, which also included women organisations, said their support for Marwa was based on the leadership qualities and meritorious performance of the former administrator.
They added that he has endeared himself to the less-privileged through his generous and philanthropic activities.
Addressing the delegates from the 19 Northern states, the chairman of the youths coalition, United Youth Empowerment Organisation (UYEO), Malam Rabo Abdullahi, enjoined them to go back to their areas to sensitise and mobilise youths and women at the grassroots to ensure the actualisation of their aspirations in the 2007 Presidential Polls.
The youth leader also stated that gone were the days when disgruntled politicians and charlatans would use the youths as political thugs to achieve their narrow and selfish ambition, and dump them soon after elections.
Abdullahi said: "Youths are vibrant and energetic, hence these politicians always use them to achieve the goals at every elections. But as soon as these politician achieve their goals, they abandon the youths, feeding fat and leaving the youths in penury and misery.
"We say no to use and dump intrigues of these politicians. We will no longer allow ourselves to be truck pushers, leaving us with dusts. We constitute larger percentage of the electorate and today we take our destiny into our hands and God willing, we shall get the ideal leader in 2007, in the person of Buba Marwa possesses all the credentials and leadership traits to pull the nation out of the woods."
Abdullahi, however, lamented that most of those aspiring to rule the nation again contributed enormously to the backwardness and impoverishment of the North and Nigeria in general.
