Youth group urges Akume, Ayu to testify on Kwande crisis
THE Benue Youth Council (BYC), a non-governmental organisation, has called on the Benue State Governor, Mr. George Akume and Internal Affairs Minister, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, to appear before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry on Kwande Crisis to defend themselves on the allegations levelled against them by opposition politicians.
In an interview with The Guardian in Makurdi, the group's publicity Secretary, Mr. Idoko Odangla, said the appearance of Akume and Ayu was necessary to restore the confidence Benue people have in governmental institutions.
The group noted that the allegations made against the men by opposition politicians were too weighty to be ignored.
Said the group: "To give the Oputa Panel the credibility it deserved, President Olusegun Obasanjo personally made appearances to clear himself of allegations levelled against him. Governor Akume and Internal Affairs Minister, Dr. Ayu, should avail themselves of this opportunity to respond to critical issues once and for all".
The group commended the commission for extending its period of public sitting, to accommodate the evidence of the Benue All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Leader, Dr. Paul Unongo, who was accused by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of masterminding the crisis.
They stressed that the report of the commission could only be respected if all parties allegedly involved in the Kwande Crisis could make their presentations in the open.
The group also appealed to the Senate to ensure that the Anisolowo report was debated on the floor after the report of commission is submitted. According to the BYC, the Senate should give crisis resolution the deserved attention.
