VC condemns passage of Labour bill by Senate
NIGERIANS may not experience any improvement in their lot except the political office holders stop politicking and start governing, the Vice Chancellor of the Imo State University (IMSU), Prof. Anthony Anwukah, has said.
The don who decried the recent passage of the Labour Bill by the Senate, urged President Olusegun Obasanjo to consider the conditions of the masses before initiating any policy.
He spoke at the weekend while receiving officials of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) who attended the Eastern Zonal meeting held at the institution.
The vice chancellor who was worried by heat the bill has generated in the polity, said: "The way things are going between the President of this country and the Senate is not proper to the will of the masses. There is a limit to patience.
"Let them stop politicking and start governing. Until they stop politicking, things will still go the way they are. Let them know we are suffering"
The vice chancellor who was accompanied by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Francis Nwankwo and other principal officers said IMSU authorities have not reneged in implementing circulars on staff welfare passed to the university provided it was genuine.
He said that over N70 million had been earmarked by the authorities of IMSU for the payment of gratuities and pensions to retired staff.
According to him, a friendly posture has been maintained by his administration, urging SSANU officials to articulate a position paper on the Labour bill and other issues affecting them to the conference of vice chancellors for deliberation during its next meeting.
Speaking earlier and differently, the national president of the association Chief Promise Adewusi, National Vice President (East) and the chairman of the association, IMSU chapter, Nze Ralph Njoku had urged the vice chancellor to use his good relationship with staff to conduct interview to promote workers of the institution who were due to their next position.
They urged that deserving allowances should be paid to their members at various institutions in the country.
SSANU also expressed regret that the pensions reform bill and the Building Scheme were still hazy. They canvassed a ratio of 1.3 per scheme.
They condemned the passage of Labour bill by the Senate and stressed that it should be reversed.
