Saraki denies clampdown on Christians; adds there’s no tension in Kwara

By Demola Akinyemi
Monday, September 20, 2004

ILORIN — KWARA State Government denied yesterday the alleged clamp down on leaders of Christian Association of   Nigeria (CAN) in the state, and that there was religious tension as widely claimed.

The Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Alh. Raheem Adedoyin at a press conference in his office also said that   only three CAN leaders were quizzed and not seven and that they had since been released .

Adedoyin also explained that officers of the State Security Services (SSS) only interrogated the Christian leaders who were   traceable to some inciting pamphlets that were circulated around that state recently.

“If somebody is tagged a terrorist in a widely circulated pamphlets, I feel it is not out place for the SSS to invite those who are   behind it to explain those claims so that they can investigate whether it is true or not. This has nothing to do with the state   government and its policies, and I believe men of the SSS are protecting everybody’’s interest” He said.

Alh. Adedoyin also noted that the fact that neither the state chairman nor secretary of CAN was traceable to those inciting   pamphlets confirmed that nobody was clamping down on CAN or any other religious body in the state.

The commissioner said that he was reliably informed that it was after all efforts of the men of the SSS to meet the affected CAN   leaders at their respective homes and interrogate them failed that they resorted to inviting them to office with a dead line.

Adedoyin also noted that the person that was named as terrorist in the circulated pamphlets Dr Muhammed Olukade, Chairman   Kwara Muslim Youths was also said to be interrogated by the SSS and there was no controversy over it adding that all those   who were questioned are now better informed.
