Employment: Ibori wants oil companies to give priority to natives

By Emma Amaize
Monday, September 20, 2004

OGHARA — GOVERNOR James Ibori of Delta State says that for the state government to reduce tension and hostile  disposition of host oil communities to the oil companies, the oil firms have to give priority to natives  of the immediate  communities in terms of employment.

He stated this at Oghara while playing host to the Senior Vice President of the Eni Group, the parent company of the Nigerian   Agip Oil Company, Mr Claudio Rescalzi and other top management officials who visited him at his country home in Oghara.
The governor pointed out that such a measure would not only promote peaceful relations between the companies and their host   communities but would help to instil a sense of belonging among the people.

He advised that even if there were handicaps about skilled labour in the communities, the oil companies should initiate training   and skill acquistion programmes.

According to him, “that would encourage us to come out and more forcefull defend and support the activities of the oil   companies and their host communities.”

Assuring of a conducive atmosphere in the state, Governor Ibori urged the company to expand its operations in the state as such   could be beneficial to Agip.

Mr Descalzi had told the governor that he was in the state on an assessment tour of the company’s operations as well as to   acquaint the government with some top management changes in the company.

He said the Independent Power Plant being constructed by Agip at Okpai in Ndokwa East local government area of the state   was at its final stage, assuring that the first phase of the project that would generate 300 megawatts of electricity would be ready   for commissioning by the end of the year.
