Police get conditions for peace after Ambrose Alli Varsity student's killing

By Osaro Okhomina
Monday, September 20, 2004

BENIN CITY — THE Student leadership of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo State yesterday warned that until the  three conditions of a beffiting burial, arrest of killer policeman and relocation of Ekpoma police station were met by the state  police command, they would  not allow peace reign in the town following last Friday’s killing of a 300-level Political Science  student of the university, Vincent Ogugugu by a police Sergeant.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Paul Ochonu has already ordered the arrest of the killer Police Sergeant and the continued   patrol by Mobile policemen of the troubled area pending the resolution of the conditions put before the command by the   students.

Vanguard gathered last weekend that the student leadership, after meeting with the principal officers of the institution hours after   the violent demonstration, sparked off by the news of the killing of their colleague, handed the state police command the three   conditions before peace could reign on the campus.

Confirming the development to Vanguard yesterday in Benin City, the police spoke person, Mr. Fatai Kiyomi said the   conditions handed by the students body led to the order by the Commissioner of Police that the mobile policemen be retained in   the area to prevent the burning down of the Ekpoma police station by the aggrieved students.

He said the preventive operation is being headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police and would continue until they have   agreed to the truce put forward by the police. "We have been able to contain the situation and have confined movement in the   area through the order that the mobile policemen continue to monitor the area and prevent any incindent.”

Meanwhile, the Ijaw (Izon) students in Warri Delta state yesterday condemned the killing of the Student, who is an Ijaw from   the Warri South-West local Government area of the state, calling for the arrest and prosecution of the killer Police Sergeant.
Speaking in Benin City yesterday, President of the Ijaw (Izon) Students Assocition, Comrade Dennis Otuaru said the people of   Ijaw ethnic nationality received with shock the killing and demanded an investigation into the incident.
