ANPP faults Igbinedion's free education declaration

By Osaro Okhomina
Monday, September 20, 2004

BENIN CITY — THE All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) yesterday faulted the recent declaration of free education at Junior  Secondary School (JSS) level by the Edo State government, saying it had been in existence but not allowed to be implemented  by the administration of Chief Lucky Igbinedion.

According to the party, the declaration of free education in the state should have been done since 2001 in accordance with the  Federal Government's Universal Basic Education Policy, but was not allowed to work due to alleged interest by owners of  private secondary schools loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

In a statement yesterday in Benin City signed by the State Publicity Secretary of the ANPP, Comrade Godwin Erhahon, the  ANPP said the Igbinedion administration should rather than bask in the euphoria of introducing free education, apologize to the  people for the delay in declaring such policy and the collection of illegal N1000 levy in public secondary schools.

He said: "the party views the recent announcement by the state governor that his administration has declared education in the  state free up to junior secondary school level as a ruse that reduced governance to a gutter game. This is so because education  up to JSS level had been made  free by the Federal Government  under the Universal Basic Education(UBE).

“The truth is that the governor did not allow the programme to take off since because it threatened the booming business of  private schools in which his ruling cabal of capitalists in the PDP has selfish interests. He should rather apologize to Edo people  for the delay in the take-off of the UBE and refund the fees illegally collected from junior secondary school pupils since 2001.”
