Ekiti ripe for state of emergency--Gov aspirant tells FG

    COSMAS EKPUNOBI

THE political crisis rocking Ekiti State took a new turn at the weekend as a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in the state, Chief Sikiru Babalola, called for immediate declaration of a state of emergency to stem the threat of lives and property in Ado Ekiti, the capital.

Chief Babalola, who was said to have secured the support of two senators from Ekiti in the struggle, alleged at the weekend that the state governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, as the chief security officer of the state, had failed to protect lives and property.

Addressing Senate correspondents, the former governorship aspirant alleged complete breakdown of law and order in the state.

Citing the recent attack on the chairman of Ado-Ekiti, Mr. Taiwo Fasuba, Chief Babalola specifically accused Governor Fayose of aiding and abetting violence in the state.

According to him, the attack on the life of the chairman followed an alleged pattern of a systematic attack on politicians in the state.

"With the way things are in the state today, lives and property are no longer safe. A situation where the security of the state is being threatened by a man who swore to protect lives and property," he said.

Chief Babalola, who asked President Olusegun Obasanjo to declare state of emergency in Ekiti State to curb the growing trend of political killings, said that removal of the governor from office would bring peace in the state.

He described the recent attack on Ado-Ekiti council boss as politically-motivated and followed the pattern of attack on politicians in the state.

The criminologist told journalists that the situation in Ekiti State is more worrisome than what informed the declaration of state of emergency in Plateau State which swept the job of Governor Joshua Dariye.
