Scorpion stings passenger aboard aircraft

By Kenneth Ehigiator
Monday, September 27, 2004

LAGOS—A PASSENGER aboard a domestic flight from Enugu was yesterday stung by a scorpion, triggering pandemonium in the aircraft, a DC-9. The incident occurred at about 1.00 p.m. when the aircraft was taxiing to the tarmac of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, having just landed. The aircraft was immediately evacuated by the over 60 passengers on board to pave the way for the elimination of the scorpion.

The victim —Kingsley Adimike— was hurriedly rushed to the clinic of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in the airline’s crew bus after spirited efforts by a doctor in-flight to stop the bleeding from the scorpion bite had failed. It was learnt that the scorpion which stung the passenger on the leg was later killed as it attempted to escape.

“We were lucky the aircraft had already landed, otherwise, we would have been telling a different story. This is because of the pandemonium caused in the aircraft by the incident,” said one eye witness.

“Everybody ran helter-skelter to avoid being stung by the scorpion and this could have led to something else were the aircraft still airborne,” he said.

Sources close to the airline confirmed the development but said it was impossible for a scorpion to have walked into the aircraft on its own.
